In this tutorial, we'll transform simple wooden hearts from the dollar store into charming Valentine's Day decorations using Country Chic Paint and a little good old fashioned decoupaging.
Materials Needed:
- Wooden heart cutouts (we found ours at the dollar store - keep an eye out particularly in January and February)
- We love the paneled look that these hearts have, but a flat shape is just fine, too!
- Country Chic Paint in your favorite colors
- Decorative wrapping paper, napkins, or tissue paper
- Mod Podge
- Artist paint brushes
- Sandpaper (optional)
- Scissors
- Ribbon or twine (for hanging, optional)
Instructions:
1) Prep Your Wooden Heart:
-
- If your heart feels rough or uneven, lightly sand to create a smooth surface for painting.
2) Paint the Base Color:
-
- Apply a base coat of Country Chic Paint to your wooden heart using a small artist brush.
- Choose colors that complement your decorative wrapping paper, napkins, or tissue paper.
- Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding (1-2 hours).
3) Prepare Your Paper or Napkins:
-
- If you're using napkins, separate the patterned layer of the napkin or tissue paper from any backing layers.
- Cut out motifs or sections of the pattern that you wish to apply to the hearts.
4) Apply Glue or Decoupage Medium:
-
- Using a clean brush, apply a thin layer of decoupage glue or Mod Podge to the area of the heart where you want to place your decorative paper.
5) Adhere the Decorative Paper:
-
- Carefully place the cut-out paper onto the glued area of the heart.
- Gently smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles using your fingers or a soft brush. Work gently to avoid tearing.
6) Seal the Design:
-
- Once the paper is in place and the initial glue layer has dried, apply another thin layer of decoupage glue or Mod Podge over the paper to seal and protect the design.
- Allow it to dry completely.
7) Add Finishing Touches:
-
- If desired, paint additional details or patterns onto the hearts to enhance the design.
- Attach ribbon or twine to the back of the hearts for hanging, using glue or a small staple.
- Add aged charm to the finish with Antiquing Wax or Glaze.
8) Display Your Creation:
-
- Once all elements are dry and secure, display your decorated wooden heart as part of your Valentine's Day décor, or gift it to your sweetheart!
