How to Paint Plastic Toys & Furniture

A common material used to make child's favorite toy is PLASTIC. Plastic is everywhere, and as you may know, can be extremely harmful on our environment. So when we come across ways to reduce, reuse, or recycle, we take advantage! If you have old plastics toys around your house that don't match your style, theme, or just don't interest your child's imagination, why not try giving them a makeover to spark your child's creative mind?

Unfortunately due to its non-porous nature, plastic can sometimes be tricky to paint. Without following appropriate surface prep and application techniques, your paint will just peel right off! Keep reading for our step-by-step instructions to avoid this.

For this example, we're painting some old plastic horse toys. We're going to show you how we transformed these outdated, boring horses into fun, colorful, imagination boosting horses! Here's how to get started:

  1. Grab your favorite Country Chic paint colors (our 4oz paint jars are perfect for toys and other small decor items).
  2. Clean your plastic toys or furniture well with a mild soap and warm water. Use an old toothbrush to help you get into all the nooks and crannies! Rinse with clean water to remove any residue.
  3. If your plastic has fibers and bumps, give it a light sand using a 160-180 grit sandpaper.
  4. This step is very important! Apply a coat of Clear Bonding Primer to give the paint a better surface to grip onto.
  5. Use an Artist Brush to apply a thin, even coat of paint. Wait 1-2 hours before applying a second coat, if required.

Choosing a Sealant for Kid's Furniture & Toys

Country Chic Paint is durable on its own so a top coat is not always required. If you do choose to seal your paint for a bit of extra protection, we recommend using either Clear Wax or Hemp Oil for children's furniture and toys.

Both of these products are 100% natural and completely safe for little ones to play with and even chew on.

How to Build Your Own DIY Giant Outdoor Jenga Game

Another creative project that can get the whole family together is painting your very own Jenga game! The objective of Jenga is to carefully remove wooden blocks from a tower structure without causing the tower to collapse. Players take turns removing one block at a time from any level of the tower, except for the topmost layer. Once a block is removed, it's placed on top of the tower, creating a progressively taller and more unstable structure. The game continues until the tower collapses.

Hand painting your own Jenga block set transforms a classic game into a personalized masterpiece, brimming with creativity and individuality. As you pick up each wooden block, you embark on a journey of self-expression, deciding on colors, patterns, and designs that reflect your unique style and personality. The process itself becomes a delightful escape, allowing you to immerse yourself in the therapeutic rhythm of painting while unleashing your imagination. With each block, you infuse a piece of yourself into the game, making it not just a pastime, but a tangible expression of your creativity. Moreover, hand-painted Jenga blocks add an extra layer of excitement and anticipation to the game as players marvel at the fun designs and vibrant colors with each move. Whether you're creating a themed set for a special occasion or simply adding a touch of whimsy to game night, hand painting your own Jenga block set promises hours of fun, laughter, and unforgettable memories shared with friends and family.
