How To Care For Your Painted Furniture

How To Care For Your Painted Furniture

Okay, so you've painted your furniture and it looks beautiful. Now what? How do you make sure that stunning finish will last for years to come? Read on to see our tips for maintaining a flawless finish whether you used paint, wax, hemp oil, or Clear coat!

How to Safely Clean Painted Furniture

When cleaning painted furniture, you'll want to avoid harsh chemical cleaners that could react with the paint or top coat you used. It's best to stick to mild, natural products, or even just water if you can!

Use a soft, damp rag and your mild cleaner of choice to gently wipe down surfaces and remove spills.

If you're not sure if you're regular cleaner is safe to use on painted furniture, it's best to test some on a small, discreet area of your piece to see how it reacts.

Reapplying Sealants / Top Coats to Painted Furniture

Depending on the sealant you chose, you may need to reapply the product after time for optimal durability. Natural products like Wax and Hemp Oil slowly wear down over time, so they should be reapplied to keep your furniture looking and feeling its best!

  • Furniture Wax should be reapplied every 6-12 months.
  • Hemp Oil should be reapplied every 2-3 years.
  • Clear Coat does not need to be reapplied unless your furniture is damaged and repairs are needed.
The amount of use your furniture gets will determine how often it needs to be re-sealed. If your furniture is in a high-traffic area that gets touched, scuffed, or bumped regularly, you may notice that your wax or hemp oil wears off more quickly than a low-traffic project. This is why we offer a range for reapplication periods.

Repairing Damage: Chipped Paint

Uh oh...you accidentally nicked your furniture and now there's a missing patch of paint! What do you do!!

Not to worry. It's easy to fix damaged paint! Just follow these tips depending on the top coat you used:

Repairing Unsealed paint or paint with Clear Coat on top:

  1. Clean the area with a vinegar/water solution to remove any debris.
  2. Lightly scuff sand the affected area just enough to remove a bit of the sheen from your Clear Coat.
  3. Re-apply your paint to cover the damage. Aim for thin coats to avoid creating a textured look. Allow your final paint coat to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.
  4. If your project was sealed with Clear Coat, re-seal the affected area to match and blend seamlessly with your whole piece.

Repairing Scratched Paint sealed with Furniture Wax or Hemp Oil:

Since Wax and Hemp Oil both contain oil, water-based paint cannot be applied directly on top of them or it will not be able to stick to the surface. Oil and water just don't mix! In order to repair scratched paint that has a wax or Hemp Oil finish, there's one extra quick step that needs to be taken: remove the oil/wax from the area!
  1. Use rubbing alcohol and a clean, lint-free cloth to remove the wax/oil from the area surrounding the damaged paint. If you're concerned that not all of the oil/wax came off, repeat this process 2-3 times to make sure the area is really clean.
  2. Re-apply your paint to cover the damage. Aim for thin coats to avoid creating a textured look. Allow your final paint coat to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.
  3. Re-seal the affected area with wax or hemp oil to match and blend seamlessly with your whole piece.
