How to Create a Modern Finish

How to Create a Modern Finish

Not a fan of the rustic look? Not to worry! With this technique you can create a beautiful, buttery smooth modern finish on any painted furniture.

Step 1) Paint your piece with the color of your choice

We chose to use the color Bliss to paint our chair but you can choose any color! To keep the finish looking modern, it’s best to skip the distressing and keep your color opaque. Let your paint dry for at least 1-2 hours in between coats and at least 12 hours before applying Hemp Oil.

Step 2) Apply Hemp Oil

Apply one coat of Hemp Oil using a painting sponge or lint-free rag. When you’re finished, rinse out your sponge or rag with warm water and a gentle soap.

Step 3) Sand and buff for a buttery, smooth finish

To achieve a buttery finish, gently sand your piece with an ultra-fine sandpaper such as a 320 grit. Keep your sandpaper flat and don’t press too hard. When you’re happy with the smoothness, use a lint-free rag to buff away excess oil. You can let the oil sit to penetrate into the finish.

Step 4) Buff excess oil

After letting the first coat of Hemp Oil dry for approximately 12 hours, you can use a clean, lint-free rag to buff and remove any excess oil. Depending on how much usage your piece will receive, you may want to add 1 or 2 more coats of Hemp Oil for protection. Use an ultra-fine grit sandpaper in combination with the Hemp Oil to create a beautiful, modern look on any project!
